You’ve realised you need to kick start the marketing for your business. You’re thinking a new website, social media campaigns, videos and blogs... and you’re on the right track.

But before you do anything, you need to know the answers to 3 crucial questions. Get this right, and you can’t go wrong.

1. Who are you?

Deciding on what your business is called can be really tough. Is it memorable? Does it fit the industry you’re in? Has anyone else got the same one as you? These are the kind of things you need to consider.

2. What do you do?

In 3 to 5 words, what service or product do you offer? Be as clear and simple as you can. Almost immediately, your customers need to understand what you’re offering them. If they have to search for this information you’ll lose their interest and probably their custom too.

3. Why should people choose you?

What makes you unique compared to your competitors? Why do you stand out? What’s so special about the service or product you offer? This is your unique selling point. Knowing what this is could be the thing that persuades someone to go with you over someone else. And again, keep it simple. 3 to 5 words is enough.

Things to remember:

These questions may seem so simple, but you’d be surprised how many people struggle to answer them. It’ll probably take longer than 10 minutes to settle on your answers - don’t get discouraged if you find it difficult.

Establishing these 3 things is crucial to understanding your brand and who you are as a business. It will build the foundation for any marketing you do.

What’s more, it’s so important that every single person who works for you knows this information too. Your employees and the people you work with make up your brand. If you’re not all on the same page, that’s when your messaging starts to break down.
